Upcoming events and exciting news at Greater Lynn Senior Services

Grandfather With Granddaughter

Greater Lynn Senior Services (GLSS) and Northeast Legal Aid will offer an hour-long presentation on Monday, August 5, 2019 on the topic of “Grandparents Raising Grandchildren.”  The workshop will take place in the Lynn Senior Center, 8 Silsbee Street in Lynn, from 9:30–10:30 a.m.  The event is free and open to the public.  Registration is requested by calling Julie Kautz Mills at 781-477-6726.

“This topic is more relevant than ever, due to the opioid crisis in our communities, which, unfortunately, has had a devastating impact on families,” notes Kautz Mills, GLSS’ Title III Planner.  “This workshop will focus on helping individuals who may find themselves caring for their grandchildren better understand their rights and responsibilities.”  The workshop will be presented by Attorney Ellen Crowley from Northeast Legal Aid.

As a designated Area Agency on Aging, GLSS receives funding for “Title III” programs, including funding for legal services.  “GLSS and Northeast Legal Aid have been working together for a number of years to provide free assistance to very low-income people age 60 and older, who are facing legal challenges with limited means to defend themselves,” Kautz Mills says.  “Offering information to the public on important topics like this seemed like a natural off-shoot of our shared mission, providing an opportunity to bring legal information and guidance to adults of all ages in the community.”

Northeast Legal Aid (NLA) provides free civil legal services to low-income and elderly individuals in Essex and Northern Middlesex counties in Massachusetts.  NLA has offices in Lawrence, Lowell, and Lynn.  Services provided are in the practice areas of Elder, Family, Immigration, Housing, Public Benefits and Employment, Consumer Protection, and Community Development.  To request legal assistance, call 978-458-1465, go to www.northeastlegalaid.org, or visit any of their three offices.

GLSS is the non-profit Aging Services Access Point and Area Agency on Aging serving people age 60 and older, adults living with disabilities, and their families and caregivers in Lynn, Lynnfield, Nahant, Saugus, and Swampscott.  The agency offers a wide range of services—information, referrals, home care, transportation, meals, advocacy, and more—to help people remain living independently, safely and with dignity, in the community settings of their choice.
